Would You Work for Elon Musk?

Haven’t you heard? Twitter was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange. Taken private by an eccentric billionaire who builds rockets and electric vehicles in search of a new mountain to climb: restoring the town square of the Internet via social media content moderation. He may have fought it and tried to escape the deal multiple times through various tweetstorms, upper and lower court lawsuits. But here we are. Elon Musk owns Twitter.

The people are joyous, puzzled, angry, and downright curious about what in the world that Elon Musk is about to do with the loudest proudest but not even close to the most valuable social media platform out there. It’s going to be one hell of a ride, that much is for sure.

So here’s the question I have for you: would you go to work for Elon?

The setup is a little stark. It sounds like he’s about to layoff a big chunk of the company and bring people back into their offices, even those hired remotely. There’s big change coming. You’ll have to work in an office (most likely). The impact, though, will be large. The visibility will be high…and bright. The guy has gotten results. While others aim for the moon he has his eyes set on Mars. It could be a big resume boost if you put in a few years at the newer, leaner, meaner (?) blue bird.

Then there are the reports that he views people as dispensable. That he’s pretty frugal with compensation and perks. He might walk up to your desk, ask you what you’re working on, and potentially fire you on the spot if he doesn’t like the answer. Or he could elevate you up the ranks based on your tireless work ethic beyond your wildest dreams.

It’s not for everyone, but working for Elon Musk is a Rorschach test for your career ambitions, comforts, and general appetite for risk. Something to think about in these turbulent techno times.
