Multiple Manager Dilemma

Most people have a manager. Nothing controversial about that statement. But often we have multiple people that manage our time and work. That can…cause problems. Last week over a discussion with a friend they talked about their new job and how they were juggling support for multiple executives across different business lines. Honestly it took 10 minutes to explain how each business line operated, what each executive expected, and how they were racing to keep up across each one.

Summertime – 3 Focus Areas

Last summer we talked about the challenges of focus as the calendar turns seasons in “Summer is Around the Corner, Focus”. This summer, it’s a similar message. But on steroids with the reopening. People are burnt out after a long year and a half at home!

Netflix Ideas for Post Pandemic Team Strategy

Reed Hastings, Netflix Co-Founder (ever heard of him?), recently co-wrote a book about Netflix’s culture called No Rules Rules with Erin Meyer. It’s a really interesting read about how they build and maintain a high performance team that, for many, will introduce a starkly different management approach than most other standards in startup land. Its pages include relevant stories of the wins and challenges the company has faced along the way.

Media Week: Content, Commerce & Competition

There is a tectonic shift underway across the media landscape this week. AT&T announced they would be spinning off WarnerMedia and merging it with Discovery. This new entity would form a pretty massive content platform to compete on the scale of industry titans like Disney and Netflix. But that’s not all! Just a couple days (hours?) later rumors leaked that Amazon was in talks to acquire MGM Studios for ~$9B.

Quitting With Grace

Spring has sprung, the reopening has begun, and for some of us it’s time to make new moves into the post pandemic future. Yeah, I’m talking about leaving your company and getting a new job. Especially if you’re a part of one of those Spartan operations trying to bring everyone back 5x per week.. You’re gonna lose some people! Just sayin!

Gatekeepers Looking A Lil Exposed

When the conquering consumer arrives at the big pearly gatekeepers, what might she say? She might ask why she didn’t have a more direct relationship with her beloved brands. She might ask why she had to watch so many ads. It was the last thing she saw while glued to her phone before she walked into the…ok that’s enough.

Genius? Insanity? A Kookiness Scale

Founders must have been jealous with all the asset focused froth talk last week because the humans came out in full force right after to show us that asset performance doesn’t have diddly on founder performance. A wise man once said “the only difference between genius and insanity is that genius has its limits”. That man was Albert Einstein and we can safely file him in the genius category.

Is It Frothy Out There?

Maybe it’s the DOGE ripping to the moon. Could be the NFTs setting auction records. Or the red hot M&A market. The SPAC wave within an IPO tsunami?  The point is it feels a little frothy out there. “Too much money chasing too few ideas” they have traditionally said. Does feel like there are a ton of ideas out there though?

Web 3.0’s Arrival Week

In the annals of internet history, this week may very well signal an important inflection point of the transition from human driven platforms to machine driven protocols. What happened? Coinbase went public with a debut market cap north of $75B. It is the beginning of a new internet age. Web 3.0 is here.

Work After COVID: Flexibility Rules

Life beyond COVID is right around the bend. Can ya feel it? Things will be different, undoubtedly. We talked about a return to the office last week and the understandable bias of wanting to keep teams together. What will work look like in the decade ahead? How do you want it to look in the years A.C.?
